History of La Romana

La Romana is a small town located on the west side of the Dominican Republic and is about half way between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana. It was originally founded as an oil town in 1897, but by 1917 it had become known as the sugar refinery capital of the Dominican Republic.

La Romana refines all the sugar cane grown to the east of it in Higuey and Punta Cana. La Romana is also the gateway town to the all-inclusive resorts found in Bayahibe and Punta Cana (east of La Romana).

La Romana is a name of both a city and a province. While not much tourism is found in the city, there are many tourist attractions on all sides of the city and in the province of La Romana.

Places To Stay In La Romana

La Romana is known for its two all-inclusive resorts both of which are located on the beach of Playa Nueva Romana in a country club that not only has these two resorts, but also villas, condos, and a community golf course.

Staying at either one of these resorts allows you the opportunity to visit the Dominican Republic knowing you have a safe, clean, and very beautiful place to enjoy the Caribbean breezes, beaches and sun. Once checked in, you can relax, put your credit card and cash away and head to the beach or pool with your favorite rum drink in hand.

While these resorts are exceptional, we encourage you to get out for at least one day to explore all the Dominican Republic has to offer outside of your resort walls.

Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville

The resort is known as the “couples’ resort”. This adult only all-inclusive luxury resort has 2 pools, 6 restaurants (international, Brazilian, Asian fusion, Italian and seafood), 4 bars (beach bars, pool bars and a couple located throughout the resort), disco, spa and a golf course.

Grand Bahia Principe La Romana

This family-friendly luxury resort is comprised of 1 pool, 5 restaurants international, seafood, Mediterranean and Italian), 3 bars (at the beach, pool and in the resort), a kids’ club, a spa and a golf course. There is entertainment for adults and children alike.

Very Reliable Company From The Santo Domingo Airport to La Romana

I used Santo Domingo Taxi 3 times during my visit in February 2020. The first time for a transport from the Santo Domingo airport to the La Romana cruise terminal. Since there was no English speaking driver available, we had an interpreter for free. When we returned to La Romana after our cruise the driver was already waiting to take us to our hotel in Juan Dolio Beach. The last transport was from our hotel to the airport. The fixed price is very reasonable, and you don’t have to worry that the drivers will be late! For us a very reassuring idea while travelling in a foreign country.

Family Testimonials

Prompt and Very Safe!

This was my first time booking a local taxi from SDQ to one of the La Romana resorts, so I read through all of the reviews, and the 5-star ones don’t lie! Our drivers to and from the airport were polite and professional, and the ride was smooth and efficient. At both pickups, the deriver was already waiting and holding a sign with our last name on it. I loved that everything was arranged with Ken over email before our trip even began. I would use them again in a second!
